Did Genichiro kill the Master of Senpou Temple?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:18 PM PST

Note : I would want to preface the following by establishing that most of the speculation is based off of my memory of the game's playthroughs as opposed to a researched work or something of that sort. Never dwelt in Sekiro or Souls-borne communities/ Lore discussion threads or channels.

    Hello everyone,

So today I happened to be speculating (by myself) about certain things concerning Sekiro's events, as mentioned in the title.

To add a little context for those unfamiliar :
The mystery regarding how the Temple Master could've possibly died despite having been infested with the Worm has puzzled me ever since my second or third playthrough of the game. I am fairly well versed with the Sekiro's world, with about 7-8 playthroughs in the bag, having inspected every inch of the world far as I could.

Now the topic in question isn't a mystery you'd happen by on a particularly rare basis, as a matter of fact the game does pull it into somewhat of a spotlight (?) if you pursue the Return ending. The divine daughter would seek another Holy Chapter tome (?) which could be found by the Temple Master's carcass in the Cave besides the Main Hall.

Upon acquiring and subsequently delivering the tome to the Divine Daughter, she would inquire as to what remained of the priest. Informing her of his death prompts her to remark with shock that its impossible for him to have died, owing to the worm's infestation.

Now that's an obvious inference that we as the Player would've made anyway, since the notion of how the Worm bred a corrupted form of immortality into the Monks is no secret by this point in the game. Though her remark does further reinforce the validity of this anomalous find.

    Speculation :

Now the gist of this elaborate passage is my assertion that Genichiro was the one who killed the Temple Master, and with the Black Mortal blade nonetheless.

    Evidence :

The strongest piece of evidence is, of course, the fact that there is literally no other way to kill an Immortal in this world mentioned as of yet, save for the one and only method of killing them with the Mortal Blade. The only one in possession of a Mortal Blade is Sekiro, but as we find out there is another Mortal Blade - 'Open Gate' in possession of Genichiro.

The fact that even the Divine Daughter herself never mentioned a single word regarding the existence of a second Mortal Blade points towards the possibility that its existence's knowledge was even more esoteric than that of the Crimson one's. Hence why she was astounded by the discovery of Temple Master's death. Isshin Ashina also only ever speaks of the Mortal Blade as singular.

Secondarily, my recollection of the Playthroughs is as following :

In my first playthrough, I went to Senpou Temple immediately upon passing through the Ashina Castle Gate after the Blazing Bull Fight, meaning before the Main Fight with Genichiro on the rooftop Dojo of Ashina Castle occurs.

That was the ONLY playthrough in which I met up with the Master of the Senpou Temple and had a chat with him, where he asked me to deliver the Holy Chapter : Infested tome to the Divine Daughter in person.

In all of the other playthroughs I visited Senpou Temple after Genichiro boss fight and had to dive in the pond near Temple Ground to acquire the Holy Chapter : Infested tome. The Temple Master is missing from the Main Hall and instead there's the option to interact with the Bell sitting on the offering table, which we interact with to proceed to the Folding Screen Monkeys and so on and so forth.

Focusing on the latter instances - once Genichiro flees after having been defeated, there's no mention of him following that until the end game.

Now Genichiro would have visited Senpou Temple in search of the second Mortal Blade following his fight with Sekiro, since we know for a fact he isn't in possession of the Black Mortal Blade up until that point in the game's events.

Why? I'd wager he sought a means to kill Sekiro for good, since he was immortal (by the narrative's PoV) owing to Kuro's Dragon Blood's power and couldn't be killed per se. Even if Genichiro managed to defeat him, Kuro's power couldn't be his own until Sekiro was gone.

Genichiro was awfully chum with the Senpou temple monks, having consumed the rejuvenating waters and everything. Its a lot more likely that he would have known about the Black MB than anybody else.

The Senpou Temple monks were obsessed with the pursuit of immortality, so its not too far fetched to assume that they would have sought after the Black Mortal Blade, since it has the power to resurrect the Dead or as its Scroll says - "The blade's name is 'Open Gate', and is said to hold the power to open a gate to the underworld. It is through this power that it creates life."

To summarise, when Genichiro vs Sekiro fight hasn't happened upon visiting Senpou Temple, the Temple Master is alive. If it has indeed occurred prior to visiting Senpou Temple, the Temple Master is dead upon arrival.

Now why would Genichiro kill him? Well, more than likely to prevent the Monk from helping Sekiro upon arrival.

Maybe it was him hoping that Sekiro would never make it to the Divine Daughter and acquire the Crimson Mortal Blade himself for that matter. Or maybe it was him trying to prevent the Monk from telling anyone about his possession of the Black Mortal Blade, in case he knew of it.

Its even possible that the Monk himself wanted to die and ultimately be rid of the corruption of the Worm, and asked Genichiro to finish him off. Quite unlikely considering the state that we found him in (the Holy Chapter tome by his side for some reason as well), but it isn't entirely impossible.

That's about it, far as I can think for the sake of adding to this already excessive think-piece as of now.

    To Stealth the Unstealthable

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:36 PM PST

Having played dozens of cycles of this game, I've had a lot of chances to try out different plans and routes to try to stealth clear every area. It's a really fun puzzle to plan around sightlines and patrol timings, testing the limits of enemy vision and hearing.

However, there are still some enemies I've never figured out a way to silently dispatch without raising an alert. I'm not counting stuff that's obviously supposed to be a brawl, like the seven dogs in Senpo or the monkey pile. I'm interested to know if anyone has a stealth strategy for these:

    Hirata:

Guy on the stairs after Flame Vent fire

    Shieldmen before Enshin

    Mist Raven ninja

    Senpo:

    Twinblade on the broken bridge

Lone hat assassin in the rocks above temple grounds

Centipedes in the rafters above Long-arm Centipede Sen'un

    Sunken Valley:

    Shotgunner by dying assassin

    Snake Eyes Shirafuji

Last shotgunner before Gun Fort idol

    Castle:

Two nightjars just before WOO guy

    Outskirts:

Gunners on the bridge from Old Graves

    Gunner after Shigekichi

    Fountainhead:

Noble in building by bridge dancer

Two nobles just before Flower Viewing Stage idol

Purple footballer just before Divine Dragon

Getting spotted, losing them, and killing them as they return home doesn't count because you got caught. Can anyone teach me a thing or two?

Last year, I tried to beat the Sword Saint. I failed. Falling at the final hurdle a hundred times, never to complete it... Decided with the new update I'd give Sekiro another shot. With panic in my heart, I got to the third-form for the first time and BEAT IT IN ONE TRY!
