The Taro Troop's Origin - The Twisted Version of one of Japan's most beloved Folk Heroes

    Kintaro

I don't know about the rest of you, but personally one of the strangest groups of enemies in the game is definitely the Taro Troop. These hulking, yet childlike, enemies are definitely strange when compared to the other enemies in the game. In spite of this though, there is almost nothing in the game to tell us more about them. Really one of the only items to do so is the Taro Persimmon which only says that it's one of their favorite foods. So the question becomes, who or what are the Taro Troop? While I can't say much about where they come from, I can at least speak to the origin of their name and design. They are twisted versions of one of Japan's most beloved folk heroes, Kintaro, otherwise known as the Golden Boy.

Depending on the story Kintaro was either abandoned in the woods or born to a Yama-uba, a mountain hag. In any version of the tale, the Yama-uba raised Kintaro and he grew strong in the mountains, to an insane degree. Despite only being a child, he was capable of immense displays of strength including wrestling bears or tearing trees out of the ground with his bare hands. He was said to be friends with many of the animals in the mountains and almost always carried his giant hatchet and wore his iconic bib, which was usually depicted as bright red and had the kanji for gold (金) written on it.

At some point during his life, he was said to have been encountered by the famous samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu. Once he was older, he even joined Yorimitsu's army and became renowned as one of his Shitenno, or four braves. This was a group of four trusted and famed retainers that served Yorimitsu. Today, Kintaro is a beloved folk hero in Japan and many families keep Kintaro Dolls around in hopes that their sons will grow up to be as strong and brave as him.

While the Taro Troop is a far cry from the heroic imagery of Kintaro, they definitely share many other features. There is no doubt that the Taro Troop's size and strength are supposed to be references to Kintaro and it also explains their strange childlike expressions and behavior. As further proof, more than a few members of the Taro Troop are in areas where they fight alongside animals such as dogs and monkeys which also harkens back to Kintaro's friendship with animals. As a beloved figure, Kintaro shows up in many forms in Japanese pop culture, but the Taro Troop is definitely one of the most twisted references to his legend.

If you made it this far, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read this. You all seemed to like my Genichiro fight, so here's me beating the Demon of Hatred on NG+7 (Charmless and Demon Bell) without taking damage! This one's a bit long; I don't fight this boss very often so for me he's the hardest in the game.
