I’m scared I won’t enjoy Sekiro. Would it be a better idea to play it safe and buy an easier game?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 07:35 PM PDT

I'm not exactly great at the later Fromsoft games, largely due to the faster pace. Everything about Sekiro looks amazing, but I'm afraid I won't be able to handle it. Would it be better to play it safe and buy something less difficult or slower, like Dark Souls 2 or The Surge 2?

Edit: Bought it. HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING.

    Fuck the Demon of Hatred

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 06:28 AM PDT

Fuck this stupid boss that goes against everything I've been taught about the game. Try to parry and get punished. Try to be aggressive and get punished. Fuck his stupid AOE attacks, fuck everything about him, fuck his headbang attack.

I know I just need to learn his attacks and patterns and git gud, but let me have this rant please.

    Explanation of the Bell Memories

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 05:59 PM PDT

There's a bit of confusion for how the time travel stuff for the memory bells work, so I'm gonna try to explain it, however, there are two things I must say first.

The fact you can kill Anayama in the past but also receive items like the Flamethrower note in the future creates a huge paradox, as well as the fact you can find several prosthetics in the past and then have them in the future, this could be explained as: "maybe you just remembered where you left them." But I consider it a paradox none the less.

Now, the bells do not allow you to time travel. You are reliving a memory via the bell's chime allowing you to focus on that memory. You appear as Present Sekiro (who has one arm), rather than Past Sekiro, because you are the Present version traversing the memory. Got it?

All of the events from the first visit are what Sekiro remembers. EDIT: it has been brought to my attention that perhaps this is what Kuro remembers as the bell belongs to Kuro.

Now for the tricker part to explain: Owl's Bell.

This is not Sekiro's memory. Sekiro is once again focusing on a memory via the chime from the bell, but this memory belongs to Owl. This is what Owl remembers from that day and though he is dead, the bell offers a way into his memory.

How is unknown but just remember this: THIS IS OWL'S MEMORY, you are just traversing it. This also explains why you fight Juzou again and why you see several Lone Shadow's you've already killed on your journey.

The fight against Owl Father never actually happened, this is Sekiro confronting Owl in the memory, the same Owl that stabbed him that day and perhaps his dialogue before the fight is what he was thinking before stabbing us. And perhaps his dying words are what he truly thought as we beat him on top of Ashina Castle.

If you doubt that the fight against Owl Father didn't happen, Sekiro can face stronger versions of his foes via memories, the Inner bosses are just that, memories that Sekiro thought of and faced in his mind. There's also the fact that Owl believed we died that day in Hirata, it wouldn't make much sense to think that if we beat him that day, would it?

    Xbox Elite Controller not working

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 07:52 PM PDT

So I just bought Sekiro and I launched the game only to be disappointed that my Xbox controller is unresponsive in the game. Let me be clear, I have no issue with any other game. I've tried re-installing, updating the controller, plugging it in, setting the controller to generic, and as keyboard functions (this was convoluted and didn't work as expected. The controller is recognized by steam and I can even show the left thumb stick on screen as working. What could be the issue?

Here is a video of my frustrations: Video

Just beat Genichiro but I had to get rid of the bell.

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 11:11 PM PDT

This is my first play through and I decided to get the demon bell and go charmless. It was fine until genichiro. I messed up a lot and only managed to get to the 3rd phase around 3 times. After I got rid of the bell the fight just became too easy. I feel sort of guilty too. Right after I beat him I went and got the bell again but Im worried I'll just keep taking it of after every boss. For those who used the bell, how do you do it? Parrying and deflecting is easy enough but when you can barely do any hp and posture damage to them it gets sort of frustrating.

    Wolf the traitor?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 03:30 PM PDT

Playing through a second time after finally being able to play through this game (my original character has killed everything except Ishin), and something which occurred to me towards about half way through my last playthrough seems to have been confirmed by a certain piece of npc dialogue I missed:

    [SPOILER ALERT]

It seems that the player character (Sekiro) may have betrayed Kuro (his master) in the past, leading the other animal Shinobi, and a group of bandits, to the Hirata Estate, where Kuro was being brought up (in secret?). It seems like at one time all four animal named Shinobi (Wolf, Owl, Butterfly & Orangutan) might have been associates, or at least some of them. Obviously, Owl and Wolf knew each other, and it seems Lady Butterfly also taught Wolf at one point. Wolf does not recognise Orangutan in the beginning of the game, but obviously he doesn't remember Hirata at all (though as Kuros protector he must have been there). It's also possible that Orangutan had left the group, or stopped being a Shinobi, by the time Wolf met Owl. In any case, the Shinobi attacking the estate with the bandits, Owl and Butterfly, are both associates of Wolf. So what were they doing there? Well, when we finally reach Kuro in the estate, Butterfly is with him. It's also apparent later in the game that Owl is interested in Kuro. Owl is also at the estate, and pretends to die when we meet him (only to kill us after we kill Butterfly). After this night, Kuro ends up a prisoner of Genichiro. Was he delivered to Genichiro by Owl? It seems likely.

So where was Wolf in all this, originally? Owl clearly has a powerful influence on him, as his "father". Could Wolf have been convinced to betray his young master for the Iron Code? Perhaps doing so was what led him to become so dejected that he seems to be waiting to die at the beginning of the game. He has given up on life. He feels worthless and knows he let Kuro down. We might assume this guilt was simply at having let Kuro be captured, but might it be something even worse? Certainly makes a better story.

And perhaps the pain of all this, is what has led Sekiro to blank out that night at the Hirata Estate.

If anyone has another theory I'd like to hear it, though I'm pretty convinced that the above is cannon. It also makes the rest of the story so much better, as it becomes a story of redemption, rather than simply revenge. The purification ending (where Sekiro kills himself to give Kuro a normal life) in particular is made so much more meaningful in this context. Its making me emotional just writing it.

Easily the best story in the Soulsbornikiro franchise.

Why does no one use the mortal blade?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 12:39 PM PDT

I just finished Sekiro (it's why I've been posting so much 😂) and been watching a ton of videos on it. But no one ever uses the mortal blade, they always use fire crackers.

But from my experience the mortal blade does high damage, high posture reduction, and staggers with a long and wide reach in one or 2 moves. But everyone I see uses the fire crackers which are immediate and open an enemy up but you need to be close and still mostly only hit their vitality.

For instance, in the 2 headless ape fight all the videos use fire crackers which don't always work. I ran around slashing with my mortal blade which made the second ape pretty trivial and died quickly.

If it wasn't a limited use item (at least in the sense it's only that effective when you have spirit emblems).

Once I got the mortal blade, except for specific boss types (like ones you need the umbrella or divine abduction to get a Puppeteer Ninjutsu mid battle) I kind of found no use for the other prosthetics bc the blade did it all.
