Praying Strikes - Exorcism is actually good, but why is hard to find (spoilers).

    Posted: 27 May 2020 12:06 PM PDT

Spoiler warning is because I mention the names of some end-game bosses, and talk about the mechanics of one of them. You have been warned.

TL;DR: You can charge the first hit of Praying Strikes - Exorcism to cancel A LOT of dangerous attacks fairly safely without using Spirit Emblems, making it incredibly valuable for some fights like Shura Isshin, Isshin the Sword Saint, Genichiro Ashina, and maybe Owl/Owl (Father) (haven't tested against them yet). This doesn't work on any enemy larger then Owl, such as Guardian Ape, Taro Troop, the Drunkards, etc...

First of all let me get this out of the way, this was not my discovery. I found this via this youtube video.

Now, let's go over the basics. You unlock this skill from the Temple Arts tree. It's fairly cheap and required to progress along the tree towards High Monk. It comes in 2 versions, Praying Strikes (PrS), and Praying Strikes - Exorcism (PrS-E). The only difference, at first glance, is that PrS-E adds an additional follow up shoulder slam, however there is a problem... this attack deals basically no posture damage, and literally no vitality damage (or at least not enough to cause a visible difference in the health bar).

So the question is raised: Why even use this.

Well first things first, the 3 hit combo of PrS-E has a unique feature. Similar to Ichimonji Double, Ashina Cross, and other multi-hit combat arts or attacks, it comes out so fast the enemy cannot attack between the 3 hits. This means it's a "safe" way to deal damage, but then the problem is it deals basically no damage. So, once again: why even use it.

Well PrS-E has a something that I've almost never seen used: You can charge the initial hit to go immediately into the shoulder-slam. This does come with a longer delay (which means it is punishable by many enemy attacks), but has a unique trait: It deals INCREDIBLE amounts of poise-damage. In fact I think this might be the single largest poise-damage hit in the game, it's only rival being the held version of the Flame Vent. For those that don't see this as useful, let's go over an example.

Say a player is facing off against Shura Isshin. As they probably know the final phase has a very dangerous move where Isshin makes a stance, charges up, and causes the arena to erupt in flame, then charges towards the player and unleashes a combat-art called "One Mind." This attack is incredibly dangerous, as there is little time to get away from Isshin's One Mind, which can outright kill the player potentially. So what do they do?

Enter PrS-E. If the player recognizes this attack is coming, they can fully charge the first hit and stagger Isshin out of the move, thus negating it for effectively the entire fight as this method does not use Spirit Emblems. This method can actually be extended to most human bosses, or at least any attack they perform that has a long enough delay to fully charge the hit. More examples include Emma/Isshin's Grab, Genichiro's Mortal Blade or Flurry attack (second part), some of Sword Saint's spear-combos, many many mini-boss perilous attacks, and etc...

There is a minor catch however, and that is that this doesn't work on any "big" enemies. Ones like the Drunkards, Guardian Ape, Taro Troop, and etc.. It's also difficult to pull off against some faster attacks like Isshin Sword Saint's sword-into-spear-spin combos. There is also the matter of Ichimonji Double, but based on my testing that one has even tighter timing in exchange for greater rewards.

Anyway, I hope someone has found this all useful. Sorry this got so long. GL incorporating it into your gameplay.

    The second playthrough

    Posted: 27 May 2020 10:04 PM PDT

Yesterday I started my second playthrough of Sekiro and have to say, my evolution when compared to my first playthrough is enormous.

My story with this game begins almost in the end of the last year, when I bought the game. As you espect, I got my kicked by basicly anyone who had a life bar (including the frigging cocks!). I had the muscle memory Dark Souls and Bloodborne, so every time someone attacked me I'd always, ALWAYS spam circle in an attempt to panic roll and run away to heal. Not only that, but I was quite stuborn to start parrying the world.

The moment the game finally clicked was when I fought Genichiro for the second time and, also, was the moment that I fell in love with the game. From there, I'd still die for gravity, minibosses, Guardian Ape and so on. It was hard but reached Ishin (sword saint) and beated him to death.

Now I restart the game and carry all experience from my first 30 hours: beat (not lieing) almost all the bosses and minibosses on my first try. The game isn't easier but now I'm playing it as Sekiro and not as Dark Souls or Bloodborne. Currently I'm at Owl Father (fighting him for the first time) and the challenge came back. What a great boss (still stuck in the first phase though).

In summary, this game is great and I'm not gonna stop playing it so soon.

    Tl,dr: I got gud

Do you think From will replicate Sekiro's mechanics again?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 12:06 AM PDT

When I bought Sekiro, I read a lot about how people had complained of its' difficulty. Even Miyazaki mentioned about how unsure he had been while developing this game in his game award acceptance speech last year. Do you think this might have put him off from replicating Sekiro's combat mechanics in future games?

Because if so, it would be a shame. This is probably one of the most beautifully balanced games I have played so far (up till the Guardian Ape as of now). The bosses are perfectly designed --challenging, but not tediously so, and fair, but not to the point of becoming a cakewalk. This is trademark From, most of their boss designs never resort to cheap shots or artificial difficulty. These features were present in Dark Souls, but I think Sekiro represents a higher perfection of that craft.

And the actual combat mechanics are exhilarating. Some may feel one weapon and mashing parry is one dimensional, but it really isn't -- its' an intelligent system that makes you figure out when to attack and parry, whether to go for whittling down Vitality or Posture, and regardless of all this, feels like a brilliant sword fight -- the level of immersion is unreal. Add the verticality and Spiderman's movement via the grappling hook, and this is a game for the ages.

Which is why I'd like From's future games to take their main inspiration from Sekiro's difficulty level and combat mechanics. But when I see articles like this:

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/screenrant.com/elden-ring-rumors-leaks-difficulty-settings-from-software/amp/

It appears like From have been a bit concerned they went OTT with Sekiro's difficulty and might soften things up in Elden Ring keeping that in mind? Would be a shame if so, the balance is perfect and I'd like to see Elden Ring's bosses retain Sekiro's levels of challenge. I don't really understand the difficulty criticism for this game, the parry window is so generous that it doesn't take long to get a hang of it.

    True Corrupted Monk (again)

    Posted: 28 May 2020 12:29 AM PDT

As my first video on my reunion with Sekiro and the fight with Genichiro had a positive feedback I thought I'd give my second favorite enemy another chance for a fight.

So here is my first encounter with the True Corrupted Monk after a long time. The save game file is from Nexus Mods as my very own new gameplay isn't as far yet and all my other fights against her are only at higher levels.

Also sorry about missing that terror attack, I totally forgot about this status abnomality that it could kill you. I wasn't really prepared for it to kill me here so I forgot to cure it. But yeah, it's been a while and there is just too much stuff to remember.

How does From software do it?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 08:19 PM PDT

Sekiro is the first From Software game I've played, after playing sekiro which is, by all means, a fucking masterpiece, I am wondering how does From Software make a game of the year in 2019 with a download size of just around 15 gigs? what kind of black magic do they perform to pull something like this off because now that I am downloading dark souls 3 I just noticed the game is 23 gigs, I mean sekiro goes about 8 gigs lower but come on 23 gigs is nothing even in 2016 when DS3 was released, does anyone have any input on how they do it because I am really curious.

    Sekiro Steam Achievement in NG+

    Posted: 27 May 2020 11:47 PM PDT

Hey, guys I recently finished Sekiro and I was going through my Steam achievements and saw that I was missing the Corrupted Monk Achievement. I'm guessing that my Steam went offline when I was fighting the boss so it didn't register. Do you know if I can still get the achievement if I go beat him again in NG+ or will I never get it?
