Why Genichiro is the perfect bossfight Posted: 21 Jun 2020 02:20 PM PDT So i hear you say: "what???". And that is to be expected. But let me set this scene for you. You start up a game, kill some no name peeps. Slap some fancy guard who thinks he is all that. Go under the bridge, see a troll, thing? Kill it anyway. Blow a reed whistle after scouring the area (souls games be like, hidden items) and proceed on. Go through the tunnel. Wauw, flowers, neat. A sheit, some punk with a bow. Lets kick this lads ass. And he killed me in 5 slashes..... This. This will be the first experience of most people (inb4, omg, i killed Genichiro there first try as a newb to the series. Im so cool). So he slashes your arm, game begins. So why is this important? It sets Genichiro up as the guy to beat. A guy you had no chance against when you started. So you go through the game. You beat string lady and horsey guy. Its all fine and dandy. Died a couple times against them. But thats part of the game. So now (or you go to the temple), you climb Ashiras castle. Kick some weird ninja dudes of the roof and kill that ichimonji bastard after biting the dust 10ish times (inb4 i killed hi.. yeah yeah, you are a great prodigy at this game stfu). And see some poster about lightning. So know you get up to the arena and there he is. The arm slice guy and your little lord. So you go at it again, and again, and again, and again, and you get the picture. This boss is in my opinion, a perfect boss fight. It is difficult. You exchange blows. Some you parry some you dont. And suddenly you see. Both of you are halfway into you posture bars. But neither of you have taken any significant damage. This blew my mind. Gyouba did not really have this at all. You could damage his horse for constant damage. And lady butterfly could quite easily be overpowered with a bit of dodge slashing. But this lad. He cancels his attacks to block yours. He dkes slashes, thrusts, grabs and combos. The combo where he unleashes a flurry of attacks for one final slash which, if you block, ends both of you guys back into fighting conditions, is maybe one of the best in the game. This entire fight feels like an actual exchange between to shinobi, giving it their all to kill eachother. The emotional weight of this guy being the reason you lost your arm is a great motivator to push on. And then, his bow. Part of his design is his giant bow. For some he might have used it in his first fight. For others now. But how will he use it in such a close quarter fight effectively? Well let me tell you, he does. And this is, imo, one of the things the developers did great in designing his fighting style. He never uses it in close combat. He either waits for you to heal to fire a charged shot. Or he jumps backwards in the air to fire a few quick shots. It feels so much part of his tool box that he gets an air of invulnerabillity. He is great close range and rarely eases on the pressure. And then, when you finally got out of his swords reach, you get the cold mean reminder that you are still within his attack range. This fight is marvelous. The mechanics are great. The emotional weight is sky high since it feels recent since he cut your arm off (a great problem with some games is waiting to long with these kinds of fights, where it feels like an eternity ago that the event happens). And you still feel weak. You havent had the chance to really scale up either your attack power of vitality/posture. And you allready have to fight the guy where you literally had no chance against. But, you press on. You fight him time and time again. And then you did it. No more flasks left and you get the second deathblow. And the lad goes down. The cutscene rolls. You feel amazing. You got him. But them, tomoe style bitches. He gets freaking lightning. What the actual living fuck? And (again for most mister MLG guy) he slaps you. All that time. All those tries. And there is a third freaking phase to this fight. You are angry. Some might even say thet were slightly miffed. But now, you are even more determined. You beat him before, you can do it again. And slowely you notice you start to master the fight. Mikiri counter the thurst, jump the sweep and deflect the combos. And you hit the third phase again. This time not disturbed by his lightning since you remembered the poster. You jump, get hit by his lighting but fire it back. Repeat this a few times (die a few times) and you see it. The red dot. You gl for the deathblow and the deathblow finisher. And he is really down. You get a quick moment of post fight gameplay and a new cutscene starts. You are talking to Emma, the fight is really over. But then, Emma looks back over your shoulder. And the wolf turns. And there he is. Rising from the grave. Shedding his humanity. And you know. The beast only became more fearsome. But he turns away and dissapears with a thunderclap. And now he is loose. You dont know when you will see him again, but you are filled with a slight dread, knowing that when he returns, he will be so much more fearsome then he was this fight. Execution, theming, mechanics, emotions, dread, suspense, fuck. This is what i like to call. A boss fight. [link] [comments]

Posted: 21 Jun 2020 09:28 PM PDT Platinum the game maybe just shy of a year ago haven't played since so while I wait for GoT I figured I'd give sekiro a run this morning, NG+12 fully maxed and I just chopped the flaming bull. I love this game. Hesitation truly is defeat fellow Shinobis. I'm going for shura ending today, wish me luck. [link] [comments]
