Interesting Historical Fact for Sekiro Fans: Peasants were able to actually rise through the social class ranks and become Samurai much like Genichiro did as mentioned in his backstory

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 05:28 PM PST

Believe it or not. Back in the Sengoku Period (which lasted from 1467-1615) when Japan was still in a constant state of bloody civil war and political backstabbing where Sekiro is set in...

There was actually a time when lower class peasants and commoners in Medieval Japan could actually climb through the social hierarchy and becoming a Samurai to even a Daimyo lord despite not being born into a Samurai family/clan.

One of the most famous historical figures who had made this transition from peasant/commoner to Samurai, all the way to Daimyo lord was none other then Toyotomi Hideyoshi - one of the three unifers of Japan next to Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu... Yes you heard that right, he was the every man like us at one point before eventually he became one of the most powerful warlords in all of Japan during this time of crisis.

HOWEVER around the 1590's or so. Hideyoshi would place a class restriction system to where peasants/commoners can no longer rise through the ranks and becoming Samurai themselves. This was done to prevent any peasant who has gained enough power to become a Samurai and end up abusing that power to start another decade of civil war for more power and land.

I thought was this was very interesting and relevant lore bit to bring up in Sekiro because of the fact that it was mentioned that the fan-favorite antagonist of the game, Ashina Genichiro was said to have been originally a peasant before eventually becoming a powerful head daimyo to succeed the Ashina clan from Ashina Isshin. Which adds another potential layer of tragedy to his character....

Imagine you are a young Genichiro born from a humble quiet village raised by parents who were farmers making a decent living only for them to be caught in the crossfire consumed by the flames of war caused by many warlords trying to fight one another for land and power.

Not wanting to become a victim and desire in becoming stronger enough to fight back. Especially to prevent others from being put into a terrible situation like your's. So you accept Isshin's offer in adopting you as his own grandson, making you an heir to the Ashina clan and being trained by Tomoe - one of the fiercest warriors from the Okami clan, who has also probably grown to be like a mother to you--- teaching you everything you need to know from her in order to be a strong leader. Yet in spite of ALL of that, you still fail to protect what would has become your second home and die from an unfortunate death.... Man poor Genchiro...

Both Hideyoshi and Genichiro as with many peasants/commoners like them at the time. They fought tough as nails during the Sengoku Period to rise through the ranks of Samurai because they felt this was the only way they could escape from the constant cycle of violence and war, and for the better or worst. Use their power, wealth and influences in their own way to prevent others from being throttled into the same tragic situations as them.

I really do feel Miyazaki and Fromsoftware's storytelling with Sekiro is just as strong as their previous titles.

I hope all you Sekiro fans found this to be really interesting, when it comes to connecting the depiction of the game's take on the Sengoku Period and how it all ties into history in some way : D
