How long was your first playthrough?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 11:34 PM PST

I quit sekrio a while back because genchiro was too hard of a boss. I'm bored out of my mind and I'm gonna try and get back into it. I read on my old save file that I had 16 hours and I was still at what every considers the "tutorial boss".

So I'm curious how long did it take you guys to finish this game? I'm wondering if this is like a 60+ hour game or if I'm just bad lol.

Why Ashina Castle is the best level

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 06:18 AM PST

I know most people have fountainhead as their favourite and while it is visually impressive its only secind best. Ashina castle and is simply The best level in all of From's games and my favourite videogame level period. There's 4 reasons for this.

    1. First of all because of it's historical accuracy. I'm talking specifically about the the architecture here and won't go into much detail. This metatron video says more than I can.

    2. The layout of the level is the best in the whole game, it's the most complex with how it weaves together interiors and exteriors. There's so many branching paths on the inside which leads to elite soldiers, an Ogre, shinobi hunter etc, it also connects you to bosses and minibosses and the interior even allow for a lot of vertical movement. Encounter design is also top notch with perfectly places enemies for stealth and quick escapes when necessary.

The exteriors are nothing to scoff at either divided into a ground layer, water layer and sky layer. You can very quickly move between all three and each have enemies perfectly suited to their layer of operation, fast moving roof enemies, gunners and spearmen etc on the ground and a headless in the water. I've fallen from the sky after taking a shuriken to the chest only to land squarely on spear wielder to have an epic duel and escape snipers by jumping into the water.

The sheer sense of scale with the exteriors in breathtaking, there's nothing like walking along the rooftops having killed every enemy and just gawking at how the pink light of the sky reflects off of the astounding architecture.

    1. It's placement within the game is perfect, accessing Ashina castle opens the game up in the biggest way, granting you passage to Senpou temple, Mibu village and the gun fort. None of these are shoved in your face either, you actually have to explore, face mobs and generals to find your way to these areas and the experience varies wildly on your second playthrough when you actually know where to go, but nothing beats that first time when you keep running into ambushes (and at times fortunately merchants) when trying to get to the next area.

    2. So we've discussed what makes it the best level in From's line up. But what makes it arguably the best level in gaming is it's evolution over the course of your playthrough. You first run through Ashina is a desperate bid to escape with Lord Kuro, seeing very few enemies and not really getting a chance to take it all in. Your second time reaching it after defeating Gyoubu is when you take the time to learn the intricacies of its design and commit the layout to memory while battling the best Ashina has to offer. When you return after acquiring the special items that knowledge of the layout is tested while you're hit with new high level enemies like the red ninjas and lone shadows. You can participate in the ongoing battle temporarily allying with either side or killing them all.

The final evolution of the area is one that sees it become an all out warzone. This is what all the previous visits prepared you for, you better have committed the level design to memory and know how to utilise it's verticality to stand a chance against the hordes of gunners, flame throwers, dual katana wielders, lone shadows and more. The level completely changed across the game from stealth based to all out heart stopping warfare. There's no better feeling than jumping into the mix with a fully realized Sekiro carrying an arsenal of combat arts and prosthetics and laying waste to an entire army. Gameplay wise, nothing comes close, there's just so many enemies to bloodsmoke, puppeteer and impale with your spear. It's my most replayed part of the game by far and by the time you approach it, you should have already mastered fighting mobs, grappling and ninjitsu skills. It's the Sword Saint of levels, testing everything you've learnt over the course of the game.

So I just beat corrupted monk...

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 04:27 PM PST

Wow, Miyazaki really pulled a fast one on me. Bringing back an older boss is an absolute stroke of genius. 6 hours later and i thought i was going to have a heart attack in the last few hits. Again, wow, I think this may be my biggest achievement ever. Immaculate boss design, I am so grateful for this studio's impeccable attention to detail and design.

How Exactly Do You Get 'Bestowal' the Ninjutsu Technique?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 11:21 PM PST

I read online that you kill the Guardian Ape, possess the monkey to distract the Serpent where you get the dried visceral heart, go to poison pool through that shortcut and kill cock eyes, then you kill the headless ape and his bae. I did this a bit out of order and did not get it. Maybe because I got to poison pool BEFORE I went to the serpents lair? So can someone please tell me everything I need to do in the EXACT ORDER I should do them? And anything I should NOT do? I would really appreciate it as I'm already on my third playthrough so I would hate to miss out on my fourth due to someyhing stupid.

I cannot beat Isshin, any tips?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 02:53 PM PST

I can beat genichiro flawlessly most tries, and am getting decent at isshins first phase, but by second phase I'm down to 3 or 4 gourds and just can't outlast the fight. I've gotten to his final phase twice, I just can't get the deflections consistently.

    I can't believe it!

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 12:49 PM PST

Genichiro went down on my first attempt in NG++!!! This schmuck used to take dozens and dozens of tries. Now he fell like he was in love! I'm already on the Guardian Ape, and so far the only person who needs to be cured from dragonrot is the Sculptor... It's funny how I used to almost hate this game and now I'm having a blast. FromSoftware loves to brutally punish you early on only to reward you with all the riches in the world later if you just embrace the suck. Here's a lesson that took me a long time to learn. Patience, determination, and calmness are the three keys of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
