    The Mortal blade and Isshin

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 10:11 PM PST

So I was listening to a lore video when they said something that stuck out to me.

There is an easedrop you can do on Isshin where he tells Emma about the black mortal blade and it being in Genichiro's possession now. He states, "he can only swing the blade a few more times... when he does, the Tengu will be no more." And if you read the black mortal blades scroll, it says at the end, "I beseech you, make offerings for the Dragon's Blood..."

What the the person in the video explained was that the Black blade needed offerings to be wielded and it's possible the red one as well. As you know, the empowered mortal draw and regular version require spirit emblems to use, however it's never stated that Genichiro could harness the power of the emblems nor even collect them, as it seems only a shinobi could find a use of such things.

So instead of using the spirit emblems as a sacrifice to use the blades power, it would instead draw on the life force of others, in this case the person Genichiro, who is immortal by this point's, adopted grandfather, Isshin. Why it draws upon Isshin's life I don't know, it could be like dragonrot, where it only affects those the user is close to and Genichiro is closest to his grandfather, hence why it draws on his life. It's also eluded to that Isshin knows the blade will draw from his life, as he's talking about Genichiro wielding the blade but also saying that by him doing so, the Tengu, who is Isshin, will die.

It's also shown that Isshin died extremely suddenly. His sword is still in hand, it looks like he was ready to fight, still hanging in there from his illness and raring to go, only to be quickly struck down. The way the body is positioned looks unnatural for someone who died of an illness and the whole thing just feels unexpected and wrong even with Isshin being close to death anyways, and the cherry on top is him holding the sword.

We don't know how he died... but we may now know another reason why...

We know the black blade needs offerings to used... we know that in order to open the gate of the underworld and bring back Ashina's final hope, the Sword Saint, Genichiro must offer himself as a tribute. Perhaps it all could've even been part of Genichiro's last resort plan... to kill his grandfather and restore him to his prime to save Ashina.

    But what do you think?

    Headless, Sugars, Spirit Emblems

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 02:31 PM PST

Hello everyone, SekiroLoreNut420 here once again to follow up on my old post about the Apparitions of Ashina, this time featuring everyone's favorite ass-grabbers: the Headless.

They've been talked about a lot, far more than the Shichimen Warriors, simply due to having more lore available, but going back into the Japanese texts, I've noticed quite a few translations that are, in my opinion, less than accurate, causing a distortion of our understanding of the lore.

So, now, having studied Japanese one or two years, and with back-up from my Japanese language/history professors, I want to add my two cents to the discussion using the two items that give us the most general lore about the Headless: Ako's Spiritfall and Ungo's sugar. Ako items are technically the ones to give general lore about their class of item, but Ungo's sugar is exactly the same as Ako's, only with a little more lore, which is why I'm using it.

Of course, my translations are not 100% correct due to the style of language that Sekiro uses, and the fact that I am not a native Japanese speaker, but I will try my best.

Since I suck at structured essays, I'll just start where I think I should: Spiritfall is a weird and wrong translation.

御霊降ろし (mitamaoroshi) is a made up term, in the vein of 神降ろし (kamioroshi), which means invocation of a god, replacing god with mitama, a word for spirit.

Therefore, the items name should be translated as Invocation of the Spirit "Ako", which brings me to the next point: as many people have already pointed out, the Headless aren't actually the entities known as Ako, Ungo etc.

These are instead spirits inspired by Buddhist concepts, shown by the statues in the icons of the sugars and spiritfalls, who through the process of invocation bestow power upon people.

    Ungos sugar offers the following:

    「吽護」の加護を受ける飴

A candy used to receive the divine blessing/protection of Ungo.

Then it gives a description of how these invocations works:

    飴を噛みしめ、「吽護」に構えることで

    その加護を自らに降ろす

Biting down on the candy and taking Ungo's stance, you invoke this blessing into yourself.

Next however is one of the most important lines for the lore, and rather controversial, which means from here on out it's my personal theories:

    御霊降ろしは、人の身に余る御業

    ゆえに飴を噛み締め、こらえるのだ

The invocation of spirits is a task beyond human capacity. Therefore, bite down on the candy and endure.

The English version translates this as: "By doing so, you endure the excess karma of man from the spirits within." But as far as I can tell, this misses the mark completely. 業 (gyou) when written alone means Karma, and is used like this in other places in Sekiro, but here, it is written as 御業 (miwaza), which instead means something like „work of god". I'd interpret this as: summoning spirits is a task only a god could endure, and too much for a normal human. That is why the sugars are made: the same way you'd give someone something to bite down on when you are fixing a dislocated joint, the sugars are used to endure the pain of summoning spirits with their sweet flavor and their physical presence between the teeth.

But a warning is given to us about this invocation of spirits. Cue Ako's Spiritfall:

    人ならぬ御霊は、降ろせば力となるが、

    代わりに差し出すものなくば、やがて狂う

Inhuman spirits, if invoked, turn into power, but if nothing is offered in return, you eventually go mad.

Here, the spirits giving power are explicitly referred to as 人ならぬ (hitonaranu), "inhuman", and while Headless appear monstrous, they are still at their core the souls of humans, which make me doubt that they are the source of the power. Instead, I think this is the crux of the Headless' story:

    As we all know,

    首無しは、かつて護国のため、

    道を踏み外した勇者の成れの果て

Headless are the ruined remains of corrupted heroes that once fought for the protection of their country.

Most likely, these people became such prominent heroes of Ashina by powering themselves up through the invocation of inhuman spirits that appear to be Buddhist deities.

    Ungo's sugar tells us:

    仙峯寺は護国の勇者たちのため、

    これを葦名に広めた

For the sake of Ashinas heroes, Senpou Temple spread these candies in the country.

The Buddhist monks, who seem to be part of a more esoteric sect, help the heroes by offering them the power of their gods. But it seems this wasn't enough, and the heroes became mediums for these spirits, going directly to the source in a sense, which is why Wolf can later use their spiritual residue to access these blessings himself.

    「阿攻」を身に降ろす、首無しの遺魂

The leftover soul of a headless that summons „Ako" into the body.

Unfortunately, unable to offer anything in return, the heroes were driven mad by the inhuman powers they had invoked into their body, defeated by the task that was beyond human capacity, resulting in their various, dishonorable ends.

Wolf however has something he can offer: the spirit emblems, illusionary representations of the regret that comes with the Karma he accrues as a Shinobi. In real life, spirit emblems or Katashiro are used as stand-ins for people during rituals, acting as vessels into which sins are put and then set free in a body of water, as also described in the Ceremonial Tanto. It seems the Spirits then feed from these stand-ins instead of from Wolf, which is why he can use their power without worrying about his own spiritual health.

As a final note, I assume this is why the Headless perform the Kappa's signature behind-grab: Since their own souls were consumed by the inhuman spirits, they now rip out your soul in an attempt to pay their spiritual debt.

Here we are at the end of my ramble. As usual, most of this is highly speculative, as the language used here is extremely complicated and of symbolic nature, with obscure and even made-up words and terms. I in no way claim that what I've written is 100% accurate, and especially the part about 人の身に余る御業 is something that I've fought with a lot. But all of this makes the most sense to me.

I'd be glad to discuss this, or answer any further qustions about the language, translations etc.

    Where to farm pellets?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 05:29 PM PST

So I'm in NG+1 and I thought I was in the buy section of the memorial mob so I instinctively went down and bought his whole stock of pellets.

But I'm reality I was on the sell menu and stupidly just sold all 158 of my pellets.

I'm following up with the Shura Ending so I don't even have the opportunity to farm the fountianhead Okami warriors which is how I got my original stash.

Is there any way I can farm them?

As for progress I'm about to go and meet up with owl but I have no idea what's going to happen after that since I've not done the shura ending before so anybody know any Pre-Owl farming spots?
