Why are From games so good?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 02:34 PM PDT

I was pondering this recently while comparing Sekiro's gameplay to Ghost of Tsushima, and I've come to a conclusion as to why this is, the majority of modern games feel like they're playing themselves. In Sekiro every movement you make is a commitment, every dodge, block, parry etc feels weighty and real, and if you move, strike or parry to early or too late you pay for it. There's only a small window to cancel an attack too, so unlike other games like Devil May Cry etc, you can't just interrupt a movement you made so easily, so each movement you make is important, not trivial.

People have criticised Sekiro saying the combat is "simplistic" compared to other games, but what a lot of people don't realise is that simplicity doesn't mean a combat system that lacks depth. There are plenty of games that have unnecessarily complex combat, but is at the same time trivial and lacking any real depth when it comes to playing a game with skill. People have also criticised Sekiro's stealth mechanics saying GOT's is superior, but I'm not so sure, from gameplay I've seen it seems very Assassins Creed like, where you don't have to do anything more than push forward to scale a wall, while in Sekiro it just looks and feels more engaging. I haven't played GOT because I don't have a PS5, so I'll try not to be too critical, since this is all based on gameplay footage, but my point is that I believe the reason From games have been so successful is because it takes us back to a time when gaming really felt like an engaging experience, where your inputs matter a lot. I'm not saying games like that don't exist today, but there's far too many games that go for cinematics and imagery over the actual gameplay, From games almost feel retro in that sense, you screw up you're punished for it, while most games seek to be a source of entertainment only, and don't want to challenge and frustrate people too much. I truly admire Fromsoft as a company for bringing games back to what they're supposed to be, a challenge, and taking risks with their games, and I hope they continue to make games this way and don't water them down for mass appeal.

So yeah, in conclusion I'm glad From exist since they're changing the way developers think and make games, and that's important.

    Hesitation, Defeat, etc.

    Hesitation, Defeat, etc.

    Some notes:

    - Kuro and Wolf ('Okami') both have names that are derived from Kuraokami, which is the name for a type of shinto deity the Sakura Dragon is based on. Fitting for the two halves of the Dragon's heritage.

    - The Demon of Hatred wasn't so bad. I finished a Bloodborne run right before playing found him fun and enjoyable. Favorite boss. Y'all are weak.

    - FUCK HEADLESS

    - Mukade are awful.

I give up on this game

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 09:02 PM PDT

I can barely defeat a mini boss in this game. I struggle at fighting regular enemies. I can't do it. I'm giving up and never returning as it is too impossible for me.

    I think it’s clicking...

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 10:28 PM PDT

Up until Genichiro, I really wasn't sure about this game, but can't blame the game, it was me struggling to figure out the combat. I was stuck on DS/BB mechanics and that is not the way to go at all. It wasn't until genichiro where it seemed to click on how I should be fighting. Sure, it took me awhile...but it was mainly the final phase. I was flying through the first bit near the end.

The fight overall is fun...entertaining...exciting. And I hope the rest of the game plays similarly to this fight, or at least, I am now trained to play the rest of the game with this style.

Extremely pumped that I cleared this boss tonight!

    How many hours?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 10:06 PM PDT

I have platinum on all the other Soulsborne games. I knew this would be the hardest. I know how and why it's different. I'm trying to get it, but I'm maybe 10 hours of gameplay in and I just am not enjoying it. It's exactly what I thought I'd think about all the other souls games and I was wrong (for the other ones anyway).

I can beat the minion mobs just fine, sometimes even 2-3 at once, but the minibosses tear me apart. I beat the first general guy and the ogre, but Tenzen I just can't pull it off. I clear all the mobs, get the first sneak stab on him but I can beat him. I figure if I can't beat him there's no way I'm getting anywhere in this game.

I've practiced against the undying guy plenty. I know how to counter each move. I bought the thrust counter thing. I get the deflect timing, though I'm still mediocre at it. Maybe 80% I can hit deflects.

But most of all I'm just not having fun. I loved even the punishing parts of the other games. This one feels like I'm beating my face against a wall.

How many hours do I need to practice to git gud enough to not feel this way? I don't want to quit, but I'm a single father of two and I don't have the time to pour hours into a game I'm not enjoying just to try to get to the point where it doesn't suck. Halp…

I just got my copy of Sekiro today!

I just got my copy of Sekiro today.
I played it for about an hour on my PS5 & so far I love it. I am finding it a little easier than BloodBorne & DarkSouls 3. First hour 3 deaths, not including the mandatory death which costs us our arm. He killed me in 4 strikes.
I got some game play capture, I'm uploading the first 30 minutes, maybe I'll share here if you guys like.
