Genichiro Ashina, best boss in video game history for me.

    Posted:

By far. Out of every game I've played. Genichiro is my favorite boss. He starts off as a desperate person trying to defeat you. Like a duck trying to act cool by fighting every person he comes across

Then you fight him again while trying to get kuro back.
Showing you his true power in the third phase.

While the play through continues, he was in search of getting the second mortal blade. Using its power of immortal severance and its special power as a sword to fight the interior ministry knowing they were gonna attack.

Finally, you come across him once more, cutting kuro to make him bleed to use the dragons blood to become powerful. He is willing to go as far as cutting his own neck to bring back his grand father in his glory days. He's willing to drink the rejuvenating waters to become immortal.

Why was he doing all of this? Because genichiro wants to save ashina, just like ashina saved him when he was younger.

    Voice actor: Japanese 10/10

Difficulty before you know how to fight him: 10/10

    Lore behind him: 10/10

    Fighting style: 10/10

    Genichiro's Story

    Posted:

Genichiro has my favorite story arc in all of Sekiro and is one of my favorite characters in all forms of media. I decided to make a post about why his character arc is so unique and ultimately tragic.

Quick Disclaimer: A lot of this is based on VaatiVidya's Sekiro lore videos. If you haven't watched those, I'd recommend doing so at some point.

Genichiro is born a peasant in the land of Ashina. His family is killed at some point and he is adopted by the Ashina. It is my personal belief that his family was killed during Isshin's coup and I think there is a tiny bit of circumstantial evidence as it is said that the wars of the Sengoku Era devastated the land. Assumedly, Isshin's rebellion could have accidentally caused his parents' death.

His adoption to the Ashina Clan greatly increases his connection to the land of Ashina. A lot of people even speculate that Ashina metaphorically becomes Genichiro's surrogate family. He demonstrates a willingness to both gives his own life and humanity to save it. However, Ashina is on troubled footing. Isshin falls ill and the Interior Ministry is looking for an opportunity to final conquer Ashina.

After a major battle, the Interior Ministry is temporarily repulsed, however Ashina did not go unscathed. As Wolf traverses the land, the signs of war are everywhere. The landscape is dominated by rubble, soldiers and death. Genichiro replaces Isshin as the Ashina's leader. Isshin is too ill to continue on leading. Seeing Ashina in trouble, Genichiro immediately goes all in on the nuclear option. He wants to defend Ashina with an immortal army from either the Dragon's Heritage or the Rejuvenating Waters. This ends up being the worst choice Genichiro could have made and will ultimately lead to the Interior Ministry taking over Ashina.

The interesting part is how Genichiro came to the decision of attempting to create an immortal army. I think Genichiro is an insecure person and perhaps rightfully so. He was born to an unknown peasant family and yet he was elevated to the highest rank in Ashina. He has a strong desire to defend the land but clearly is not remotely as skilled in combat as his grandfather Isshin. The only traits that demonstrates Genichiro's leadership is his perseverance and his willingness to sacrifice himself. It is highly likely that Genichiro experiences imposter syndrome and feels that he is inadequately suited to defend Ashina. This is even evident when Wolf fight's Genichiro the first two times. He always exclaims, "I am Genichiro Ashina," as if to remind himself of who he is.

As a result, Genichiro thinks that only immortality and invincibility will give him the strength to defend his homeland. He neglects the defenses of Ashina in search of this miracle cure. He undoubtedly goes to great lengths and even sacrifices his own humanity in the search for immortality. However, his plan backfires tragically. He crosses Wolf, who devastates the defenses of Ashina.

    Wolf kills:

    1. Gyoubu the Demon
    2. The Blazing Bull
    3. Three Ashina Generals
    4. Two of the Ashina Seven Spears
    5. Two Ashina Elite
    6. Two Chained Ogres
    7. Countless foot soldiers

Wolf singlehandedly leaves Ashina open to invasion and vulnerable. Had Genichiro allied with Wolf at the beginning of the game, not only would he have avoided the decimation of the Ashina forces, but he would have gained a powerful ally in Wolf. Instead, Ashina is left broken while Genichiro chases the unobtainable.

Genichiro says that Ashina can no longer defended by normal means but I do not believe this to be true. Looking at the strength of both sides, I'd say it is an even fight and the scales possibly tip in favor of the Ashina. Genichiro could have also reinforced his position further by strengthening his ties with the Sunken Valley Clan. After all, Ashina is their land too and the Interior Ministry was a threat to them as much as to the rest of Ashina.

Genichiro accidentally dooms Ashina with his meaningless pursuit of immortality. He realizes this and in a last ditch effort, he sacrifices himself to bring back Isshin, the man that Genichiro thinks is best suited to rescue and revive Ashina. Genichiro is wrong yet again though as Wolf kills Isshin. With no one left to defend it, the land of Ashina is taken.

The tragedy of Genichiro's story is present from start to finish. From the death of his family to death and destruction of his adopted family and country. Genichiro always seems to be in the wrong time and place, making the wrong decision. Genichiro gave his all to rescuing his country but ultimately fails despite everything he sacrifices. He dies at his own hands and his death does not save Ashina like he envisioned. All he gets instead is pity from his grandfather, Isshin.

Contrast Genichiro's story with Isshin's. Isshin is not given his name and reputation but takes it from the local ruler. Isshin is also a true master of combat and relies heavily on his personal strength to achieve his goals as demonstrated by his rebellion. In later years Isshin is able to prevent an invasion from the Interior Ministry with his reputation alone. Isshin is everything Genichiro wanted to be.

The reason I like Genichiro's character so much is that he is so relatable. The insecurities and flaws that Genichiro has are universal. We all fear that we do not belong and that we cannot hold our own. The mistakes he makes are understandable but also catastrophic. Genichiro represents our greatest fear that we will give our all and sacrifice everything, but ultimately fail miserably.

    Ministry Shinobi Quality

    Posted:

The purple shinobi are absolutely fucking badass. Aside from being my favorite enemy to fight, they're insanely strong.

I lured 2 of them to the basement of the castle to fight Ujinari Mizuo for me and they took his healthbar in 20 seconds. All I had to do was step in and do the deathblows. And this is charmless + bell.

Ujinari is literally an above-average difficulty mini boss and two regular enemies just cleared him out like it was nothing. One of them was even alive at the end of it.

This just goes to show how crazy strong ministry troops are, and that Ashina has absolutely no chance. It's just cool to see.

Things get too personal in sekiro

    Posted:

Like damn once you get killed more than thrice by a boss it gets really personal like dude enough I won`t let you humiliate me anymore.
I struggled a lot with general yamauchi and raged so bad that I spent an hour practicing combat with the undying warrior in dilapidated then kicked his ass. I don`t get enough time to play video games but I just could not back off from the challenge.
Now that I know how to actually use the combat system properly this game is a breeze.

At first I was approaching the fights like I did in dark souls and relied on dodging the attacks but it didn`t work. Once I embraced the gameplay and started running around an area killing soldiers with stealth kills, deflect, mikiri counters and using grappling hook to my advantage I was not struggling anymore.

shit seriously this game is a really good experience and a very good change from the typical dark souls roll, parry and block gameplay.
