Sekiro is perfect for those who haven't played any Miyazaki's games.

    Posted: 20 May 2021 09:45 PM PDT

My experience with Sekiro is unique.

Prior to playing the game, I have already watched all the cutscenes, some VaatiVidya videos on Sekiro Lore and half of Mr.Odd's Let's Play Playthrough. So me knowing the world building beforehand would mean eliminating a lot of of the game's mysteries but Sekiro balances things out with its cutscenes and npc conversations being subtle, plus a lot of its story is on the environments that I explore throughout the map.

Like how there was snake skin in Ashina Outskirts prior to meeting it in Underbridge Valley, or there were lots of dead bodies (and child statues) in Senpou Temple prior to being told what is going on by the high-ranking monk in Main Hall, or why there was Lone Shadow ninja in Hirata Estate looking down on the chaos below (also dead Lone Shadows next to Tengu of Ashina), etc.

It's these little details that further enhances the story. With me knowing all the world building beforehand makes Sekiro's mysteries into suspense. I know how doomed Mibu Village is, but playing it gives me the atmosphere that wasn't there when I just watched the cutscenes or lore videos, same with fighting Headless, I know they were forgotten and disgraced warriors but fighting them with all the atmosphere and music on gives me creeps all the time but there's sadness to them too, same with Armored Warrior and his story with Robert.

Perhaps my favorites moments are how subtle FromSoftware portrayed Wolf's nervousness when he faces Genichiro the first time and later on with how precise his hand movements when unsheathing his blade. And how focused and single-minded Genichiro is then how reckless his moves are when he undresses to his Way of Tomoe style. Lastly how the Guardian Ape's animations went from chaotic to robotic when he turned headless (foreshadowing the centipedes inside it).

with how much I love Sekiro, I probably won't like Dark Souls (haven't played DS) due to its different focus on storytelling with its very cryptic style. but Sekiro's approach to balanced storytelling in a video game made me very respect From Software and its prior games. I know Dark Souls isn't my cup of tea but I respect Miyazaki's vision and glad that those types of games exist for certain types of players.

Plus, I like how Sekiro is hard but fair. I never like difficult games but Sekiro is a learning experience, you master the gameplay and learn how to be clever during battle, taking advantages on enemies' weakness to win the battle. I defeated O'Rin of the Water and Corrupted Monk (Mibu Village) even before I fight Genichiro in Ashina Castle and meet Kuro. Sure, I died 3 times each fighting O'Rin and Corrupted Monk but it's part of the experience.

I hope there will be Sekiro 2 some time in near future.

RIP Kentaro Miura, he might have passed away but his spirit will forever live on in his art, and in the art that he inspired, which includes the souls series.

A bit of a different post, but sadly today it was announced that mangaka Kentarou Miura, the author of Berserk, had passed away on May 6th. His works were a source of inspiration for the developers at FromSoftware when developing their games. May he Rest In Peace.

Fun fact about the interior ministry ninja's weapon (purple ninjas)

    Posted: 20 May 2021 05:13 PM PDT

Most sword-wielding characters in the game use a katana or other closely related japanese curved sword (such as odachi). Exceptions to this include the divine dragon, armored warrior (both of whom could be argued to be not japanese people), and finally the interior ministry ninjas.

In popular culture, ninjas are often depicted as using a short, straight single-edged sword called a ninjato, which is distinguished by its straight edge from the curved swords typical of japanese swordsmithing. The interior ministry ninjas appear to draw reference to this, but instead wield a scaled up two handed version that is slung behind the shoulder. This is what gives them their surprisingly long reach with their sword attacks.

Despite clearly being a two handed sword, you may have noticed that these enemies only ever swing the sword using their right arm. In fact, the only ministry ninjas that use their left arm are the hooded variants who use their left arm in their poison-inflicting attacks. The non-elite variants don't use their left arms at all. Not sure if there is any further lore that explains why they do this but it's cool. Maybe as ninjas they always want one hand free for throwing knives or poison, but even Owl uses both hands for his sword.

What martial art style does the Ministry Ninjas use?

I've always wondered what type of real life martial art it was based on because it looks pretty cool.

Is there any way to know how has dragonrot at the moment?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 04:22 PM PDT

I know this question looks dumb, but, I started a new game and managed to reach ashina depths without dying too much.. well I died there and the dragonroot event started, when the pop up showing how is sick appeared i just skipped it assuming i would need the old lady blood sample, but I already defeated lady butterfly, so the lady is dead... I have no idea how is infected so I cant cure the plague at the moment.
