Why did FromSoftware choose the Ashina clan to be the main enemy, rather than a more commonly known clan?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2021 05:37 PM PDT

Hello, everybody! I'm hoping to start a discussion with you all. After playing through the game (thrice now!), I've fallen in love with the Sengoku period. The power struggles, the betrayal, the quiet, shaky peace times, and the all-out war. That being said, this game also sparked something else in me, the desire to learn about the historical Ashina clan.

Now, the question could be pretty easily answered in a literal sense. "The Ashina clan isn't well known, so the stories fit better into the story due to the fact that their history is not well documented". This is probably the true explanation as to why FromSoftware chose a more obscure clan.

However, I want to propose some other theories, and maybe get the gears turning in others' heads.

My idea: Ashina was chosen because the historical power struggle of the clan against the Takeda clan (which likely inspired the Tamura in-game), as well as their final demise against the Date clan, fit well into an interesting story, and the fictional story provided a fantastical element to a long-forgotten, nearly legendary moment in Japan's history.

The game itself draws some unique historical parallels to me. Firstly, Ashina Moriuji, a leader of the Ashina clan, was documented retiring to pursue cultural activities. Although Isshin isn't himself seen to be engaging in cultural pursuits, he has retired, at least when he isn't sneaking about as the Tengu. Moriuji's grandson, Ashina Moritaka, was intensely unpopular when he began his reign, and so was assassinated at the age of 22 or 23. This is similar to Genichirou, where the simple fact could be changed to a simple legend about a shinobi.

The Interior Ministry also greatly resembles the invasion of the Date clan of Ashina, which resulted in the latter's defeat and subjugation by the poorly equipped Ashina soldiers. In fact, the final battle occurred on a bridge, not too dissimilar from the battle at the Ashina Outskirts.

Sorry that this wasn't much, but I'm hoping to hear some input! Thank you all for the read!

Holy fuck this game is unforgiving

    Posted: 20 Jun 2021 05:40 PM PDT

I've played DS1 & DS3 for hundreds of hours, and I see myself as an experienced dark souls player. Somewhat tired of the series, I bought Sekiro on friday. 20 hours in and I'm struggling. Loving it, but struggling. Just spent the last 5 hours fighting Genichiro, and I still haven't killed him. It's just so unforgiving lol.

In the dark souls series you can recover from minor mistakes. You can hide behind your shield or parry your way through the bosses. But not Sekiro. The smallest mistake and you have to start over. It's just brutal. Looking forward to progress the game - it's amazing.

Sekiro could kick The Lords of Dark Souls 1’s asses

    Posted: 20 Jun 2021 11:22 AM PDT

Sekiro is by far the strongest Soulsborne character with the feats to prove it and here is how he would completely kick Lord Gwyn's ass, hollow or not.

Gwyn's main weapons are fire and lightning and wouldn't you know it, Sekiro has experience with both, he has two types of powder to negate the chip damage from fire attacks he deflects and the Sazuka umbrella to completely ignore fire damage and counter with it, for lightning he can just use one of his multiple ways to redirect it or use a different umbrella for Gwyn's grab, he just runs away or... USES THE UMBRELLA.

And finally Gwyn's biggest weakness is parrying and what is Sekiro's main combat approach? Yep, Gwyn won't even get one hit in and Sekiro could only fight with the Umbrella if he wanted to...

Next, The Witch of Izalith, she fights with mostly fire so her fight could be comparable with Demon of Hatred but with a smaller target, I don't see her as much of a threat. The Bed of Chaos version however, Sekiro simply jumps the sweeps and uses his grappling hook to completely negate the challenge of the Bed. In short, she stands absolutely no chance.

Nito, Sekiro has killed undead before and with divine confetti and Nito's slowness, this fight will be over in no time. Or... he could use the umbrella.

Seath, despite his immortality, Sekiro can kill him with the mortal blade. Sekiro also had experience with dragons and could just use his umbrella to block the curse which is comparable to terror, but lets say the mortal blade for whatever reason can't kill him (even though Seath's immortality is literally the Dragon's blood immortality) Sekiro always has a way to flee the fight to look for the immortality Crystal, and if he doesn't, Sekiro is a skilled Shinobi and won't attack without adequate preparation and information first.

Four Kings, by far the weirdest match up, if firecrackers work on them, Sekiro always has a way to break them up. If not, this will be a parry war until enough damage has been done. Since they can be wounded by normal weapons, it would be a long fight but as long as Sekiro has the Covenant of Artorias, it will always be in his favor as he's the fastest SoulsBourne character and can always run to regroup.

    Question about bestowal ninjutsu

    Posted: 20 Jun 2021 03:53 PM PDT

So many of you may know that by backstabbing a poisonous lizard and using bestowal ninjutsu, you get a far reaching poison sword instead of the red one.

I can't seem to locate any poisonous lizards in a location where I can use this technique, then use it against a mini boss or even a boss.

Does anyone have any ideas? I was to see how a poison bestowal ninjutsu works against a more difficult opponent.
