In Sekiro the progression happens in real life (opinion) Posted: 08 Aug 2021 06:25 PM PDT I recently realized what is the big deal with Sekiro. In short, it is *you* that builds skill, not the character. The progression happens in real life, not in the game. The game has two basic characteristics that work in combination:
Of course you get stuff, but ultimately, it's the character (Sekiro) and his sword that does all the tricks. You don't get a +10 sword, a shield or armour. You use the exact same weapon for the whole game. Your character doesn't get significantly better, especially after NG+2, but you still evolve as a player in real life. You learn to use the sword that you got since the beginning. And that's what makes the game so great to play again: you continuously build skill. It's the player that can now deflect most of the attacks, has patience, can use mikiri, knows to read the enemies, knows how to do stealth, knows when to fire a shuriken or use the umbrella or the firecrackers, knows what candies to use, etc. You build that skill during many playthroughs. In other games these things happen early in the game. In Sekiro these happen via repeated failures and mainly after the first two playthroughs. On top of that, every single player plays the exact same character. There are no builds, no rare items to find and no skill paths to strengthen. Everyone is directly comparable to each other after NG+1, and understands each other very well. Every single player that sees Owl Father thinks of the same moves. It's like a collective progression where people find new methods, then record videos and spread the word. I recently realized that what happens during the first playthrough is that the character builds up basic characteristics (collects healing gourds, picks up skills) but it doesn't get much better by itself. You could say that during the first playthrough the game teaches you how to use skills and items by introducing you to them slowly. During that time you rely more on luck than skill. But ultimately, it's just the player, the sword, some deflects and the controls. On NG+2 and afterwards the game gets harder and you don't collect anything new. The attack power increase is pointless since the enemies now do more damage compared to your maxed out health. So you still get better and you then look back and see that you can easily beat some of the bosses that took ages before, not because your character got better but because it is you that got better. I beat all bosses in the Mortal Journey (except the Inner versions) on my first attempt and I couldn't believe it. I am now on NG+6, charmless and with the bell, managing to survive and win, something that looked impossible in the previous playthroughs, even though the enemies were easier. Did my character got stronger since NG+4 with the charm and without the bell? Nope... It's just me, the player, that got better. It is mind blowing to realize that most of the game's progression happens in real life. What a game! [link] [comments] | ||

I don't think remnants make sense in Sekiro Posted: 08 Aug 2021 04:44 PM PDT This game is very unique in the Soulsbourne series in that you're playing as a character whose appearance/weapons are predetermined from the get-go (aside from the outfits you can now unlock with the GOTY update). I feel with this game it is a very clear and personal story; you are Sekiro the shinobi on a quest to save your master. There are no other Sekiro's in the canon story/world. I also think it breaks the immersion; IMO this is meant to be played as a single-player game and the remnants break this immersion, making the game easier and thus less enjoyable in the long run. Posted: 08 Aug 2021 02:10 PM PDT On first playthrough and about to enter NG+ so I'm taking out all the Headless, Shichimen Warriors, grinding sen and experience, grabbing all the sugars etc. Normal end of playthrough souls game stuff. My current attack stat is 15 because I got a few levels out of the Dragon Mask, is it really worth defeating Demon of Hatred? I got him down to 2nd HP bar on my 2nd try with eight gourds left but that phase 2 is actual bullshit. I couldn't get one hit in before I died. [link] [comments] |
