I'm still mad that Genichiro endlessly killed me on my first playtrough of the game... So I came back after I mastered the game and decided to disrespect him in the most dishonorable way. #deathbyfishgrandma

The Real Story of Dogen and the Divine Grass

The Real Story of Dogen and the Divine Grass

    Dogen

Hello again everyone! This time I thought I would talk about the real story behind Dogen and the Divine Grass in game. For a character who seems so important to the story, we know very little about the doctor Dogen. He seems to have an advanced knowledge of medicine for a doctor of the time period but all we have to go off of are stories of him. However, one of these stories may be able to tell us more about his real life counterpart, a man named Dogen Zenji.

Dogen Zenji was the founder of the Soto school of Zen and a famed writer of the Kamakura period. Despite living in a different time period, one story of his seems to mirror the story of the Divine Grass in game. The story says that on his journey back from China, Dogen (or his companion Dosho), gets horribly ill and is on the verge of death. However, they are saved by the arrival of a woman who presents him an herbal pill that cures almost any ailment. Dogen then asks to know the identity of the stranger so that he can properly thank them. The strange woman then reveals herself as a kami (usually Inari or a Dragon Princess) and vanishes. Dogen then tells Dosho to spread this pill, known as the Gedokugan (or Gedokuen), throughout the temples of Japan. The pills were then sold as a kind of miracle cure by the Soto Temples, just like how Senpou Temple would sell their sugars.

It seems pretty clear that this tale seems to relate to the Divine Grass, an herbal pill that can cure most status ailments and was discovered by another Dogen in an ancient part of the land touched by the gods. Unlike the Divine Grass though, the original Gedokugan wasn't nearly as effective, and was said to be little more than a placebo. Even the origins of this miraculous pill are up to debate as it seems the pill didn't appear until around the Edo period, almost 300 years after Dogen lived. Rather, it seems these pills were sold by Buddhist Temples almost solely as a way to raise funds. It seems that the Senpou monks weren't the only ones willing to stretch the truth for their own gain.

I hope you enjoyed this look at the real myth behind the Divine Grass. If you'd like to learn about more of the folklore behind Sekiro, feel free to check out my channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/grimmdigitalfolklore

The Rikimaru Costume Mod with the Black Mortal Blade Mod makes this cutscene 100% more badass. Makes you think why FromSoftware didn't just add a costume/weapon options.

When deflecting, do you mash the block button? or carefully time it?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2020 12:28 AM PDT

I have just started the game and noticed mashing the block button (not too fast) works really well for deflecting. Haven't seen this mentioned in any of the videos I've watched on how to play the game. Which do you prefer and why?

    Did Sekiro cause Ashina's Downfall?!?!?!

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 11:02 AM PDT

So i read in utube comments saying sekiro caused ashina to fall to the red ministry by killing gyobu oniwa, the ashina elite, and its generals hahaha. here is what i told them:

Guys, guys, ashina is already dying, the sword saint general is already old and sick, some of the few remaining soldiers (if you eavesdrops) are cowering in fear shaking in their boots. The supposed to be the next generation of ashina, the children of ashina (the divine children), are all dead as they have been experimented on by the corrupted monks of senpou temple to research immortality. that is why ishin has the "happy go lucky AKA no fucks given attitude", there is no one left to protect, ishin also wishes to severe the immortality that pushed ashina to the brink of insanity and extinction, and yet he could not refuse the last wish of his grandson, that is... TO BRING BACK THE FUCKING SWORD SAINT AND RESTORE ASHINA TO ITS FORMER GLORY!!! But alas, the sword saint has met his match... "well done sekiro.." the end.

creepling has a lot of lore details in his utube vids, so just search creepling sekiro if you are interested about the divine children part.
