Origin of Sekiro's Plot - Himura Kenshin vs Guts

    https://www.knowll.com/a/176/241/complete-list-of-berserk-influences-on-souls-games

The intro story of Sekiro follows this pattern:

    1. A boy is in a location where death is everywhere, and if left alone will also die
    2. A man comes in and takes the boy, becoming his father and mentor
    3. The man will teach the boy and they will both excel in the same field

This intro is the exact pattern followed by the popular manga Rurouni Kenshin. As the theme of that manga is about samurai and sword fights, you may think that Miyazaki took inspiration from Rurouni Kenshin.

Himura Kenshin meeting Hiko Seijuro, master of the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu

However, the similarity stops there. The mentor in Kenshin is a genuine father-figure who took care of the boy. There is no betrayal involved. The mentor will not have any intent to kill the boy when he grows up, for whatever reason.

    Gambino finding Guts

Now let's restart the comparison with the background of Guts. The story of Guts follows perfectly the same pattern:

    1. A boy is in a location where death is everywhere, and if left alone will also die
    2. A man comes in and takes the boy, becoming his father and mentor
    3. The man will teach the boy and they will both excel in the same field

Guts was found near a tree surrounded by corpses. Apparently, her mother gave birth to her while at the brink of death and hanging in the tree. If left alone, Guts will surely die.

A group of mercenaries passed by and they took the baby. The leader of the group, Gambino, became the father and mentor of Guts.

Flash forward to the future, the following events will happen to both Sekiro and Guts:

    1. The hero will lose an arm to a stronger enemy
    2. He will meet a blacksmith that will replace it with a prosthetic arm
    3. The prosthetic arm will be weaponized
    4. One of the weapons in the prosthetic arm behaves like a cannon
    5. The father will betray the hero
    6. The hero will kill the father
    7. The hero will seek revenge on the enemy responsible for his lost arm

One of my favorite things about this game is how you can tell you’re getting progressively better.

    Posted: 10 Mar 2020 04:14 PM PDT

The combat takes a while to learn, but once you do, you feel like a badass. I feel like everyone has a click moment. Just to show that you improve throughout the game, I'll show you my death count on the bosses: (His name is) Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa: I don't know honestly. All I know is I died soooo many times. Easily over 15 tries.

Lady Butterfly: At this point I had fought multiple mini bosses, and was starting to understand the combat. I also had my "click" moment. 4 tries.

Genichiro Ashina: 6 tries (didn't realize I was supposed to deflect the lightning).

Folding Screen Monkeys: 1 try, but these guys are hardly even bosses.

Guardian Ape: I hate this guy, but still. 2 tries.

    Corrupted Monk: 2 tries again.

    Ape duo: 1 try.

    Great Shinobi Owl: 2 tries.

Haven't played past this point, but it still shows how you start to master the combat.

Hey guys! I just got my No Death/Resurrection, All Memories run earlier. Def not the cleanest run, but it was successful. Check it out:

    Ponderings about this game

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 12:01 AM PDT

It feels like this game is designed for fighting one enemy at a time. Fighting more than one isn't as enjoyable.

Is it possible to feel so in tune with the game that you can react perfectly to any enemy at any time and just kick unbelievable ass? When I don't know their moveset, I will die. It feels kind of impossible to beat mini bosses, bosses and some new enemies, on the first try.

I just want to feel good at this game. I want to feel like I can take on anyone at anytime and be all good. I hear people talking like that. Is it true?

Is there anywhere else I can or should go before the Lady Butterfly fight?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2020 04:52 PM PDT

So far I've gotten past the Chained Ogre, Gyoubu, the Serpent, Shinobi Hunter, and Juzou. Lady Butterfly is consistently kicking my ass and I was wondering if there are any alternative routes one might recommend until I'm ready to come back and beat Lady Butterfly.

Origin of Mikiri Counter - Griffith and Guts

Origin of Mikiri Counter - Griffith and Guts

    https://www.knowll.com/a/176/241/complete-list-of-berserk-influences-on-souls-games

In the game, one of the ways to counter-attack is to use the Mikiri Counter.

    Sekiro doing the Mikiri Counter

Both of the Berserk major characters, Guts and Griffith, can do the Mikiri Counter. Here is Griffith doing it against the great sword of Guts.

Of course, Guts being the main character can do the Mikiri counter against three enemies simultaneously. In the scene below, he is also doing the Jump Attack, after the Mikiri Counter.
