Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:35 PM PST Fair warning: This may appear to some as just another "I beat Isshin!" post, and that's okay. It also ended up being way longer than I expected, so sorry about that. I'm unspeakably excited for finally beating this game, but looking back on everything, I'm more excited about what I got out it. Lemme start by admitting I've always had some issues with controlling my anger. It's been much more manageable as I've gotten older, but there are still moments where I just can't keep it together as well as I want to. No broken controllers or anything, but this game gave me quite a few of those moments. I started playing through the entire FromSoft library (except Demon's Souls) in May 2019. Started with DSR on Switch, and bought a PS4 for the rest of the games. In a few months I'd quickly picked up the idea of Soulsborne combat and had little difficulty getting through and 3 Souls games + Bloodborne. Even going in blind, I just clicked with these games and it felt natural to explore every bit of the world and kill every boss. It felt rewarding to get through all of it, but it eventually stopped always being super challenging to me. That's not to say the Souls games aren't challenging (yikes @ Midir), cuz they are, but by the end of Bloodborne I felt like I could master any game with a similar combat system. Dodge, attack, repeat, victory. After all this came Sekiro, and I'm sure you know where this is going. This game blew me away, especially once I really got into it. But good God did it absolutely wreck me. I can easily say this is the hardest game I've ever played. But damn it, it's by far the most satisfying and rewarding journey I've gone on with a video game. Ever. This game pushed me to be the best player I could be, and it was unforgiving at times. I know that if I had played this a few years ago (I know it wasn't out then, but ya know what I mean), I would have raged, quit, and called this game terrible. But this time, I wouldn't let myself give up. I'd do my best to stay calm when I would have otherwise let my temper get the better of me. When I'd make even a tiny bit of progress against a boss I was stuck on, I'd make myself keep going. Even an embarrassing loss was practice for next time. And eventually, every time, I did finally succeed. This game taught me patience in a way I wasn't expecting. And like the other FS games, it reminded me that it's always worth trying again, even if you fail. At the end of Sekiro, that final deathblow marker represented every time I would have otherwise given up. Beating this game meant more than just beating this game, it showed me how much I've grown over the course of playing it. Like I said before, this is the most difficult but rewarding game I've ever played. Thank you, Sekiro, for truly helping me grow and improve as a person. First playthrough down, and looking forward to many more. [link] [comments] | ||
