Started a no item/no skill/no necklace/no ninjutsu/1 attack power/all mini bosses/no cheese run, and I think that Vilehand, of all bosses, is my breaking point

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 02:52 PM PDT

So I just finished a NG charmless + bell run after having done a previous ng+3 charmless + bell run, and I thought that the game got easier as I boosted up. Some of the hardest bosses were the ones I had to take on with little healing and before I had the essential skills. So I stupidly thought to myself "How interesting it would be to try that same thing with later bosses." The only items I'm allowing myself are the 1 use of the healing gourd (no upgrades) and homeward idol since they are starter items, nothing else. No sugars, no other gourds, nothin'. No upgrading attack power through boss memories. No Prayer Bead necklaces. All mini bosses (excluding Headless because fuck them). No cheeses including even the basic ones like the sidestep cheese for Butterfly. Purification ending since I can't use puppeteer ninjutsu to kill the snake.

Anyway, after having a my first real tough time against O'Rin (her slash - slash slash slash - slash combo cannot be perfectly deflected - the middle three will always register one of your deflects as a block which posture breaks you and leaves RNG to if she grabs [avoidable] or slashes[not]) and outlasted fake monk in a slog of a fight, I'm back at Ashina Castle and am getting whomped by Vilehand. Against others, I felt like I knew what mistakes I was making, and against Vilehand I feel like I'm doing everything right and still getting destroyed. Out of probably 20 fights I have broken his posture once, and even then I went to get the deathblow and he had recovered somehow into an attack I couldn't deflect.

His poison kills if you get inflicted, so it's RNG as to if he is going to do a poison attack, which even with perfect deflects fills your poison meter by half, and you better hope you can avoid the rest if it's the combo. No antidote potions or use of the gourd. And only the 1 healing gourd use. The entire fight has to be fought at full posture bar, so the slightest misstep means death. The varying counter attacks and their timings has me all in a heap. No mikiri counter takes away my greatest posture damaging weapon. The other bosses I've fought I've felt like I just needed to change or get one thing or try something else and I would figure it out, this one I feel totally outmatched.

I have to put this run away for at least a little while. I was actually having a great time with it with the exception of O'rin up until this point, and I'm 100% confident that I can take down GS Owl and real Monk, and about 90% that I can take down Owl (father) and SSI. But my confidence in beating Vilehand (and Masanaga and his shitty 3 health bars) is under 25% even if I spend a ton of time practicing.

Farewell for now, challenge run. Maybe I'll do a ng+ with the charm and no bell just to destroy everyone to get some Shura rage out

After 5 incredibly enjoyable runs of the game, I finally completed it! Can't wait for the DLC!
