I can't be the only one who makes this alarm in the morning. It's first thing I hear at 2 am every day. Scares shit out of my wife everytime. To be fair she had an equally loud and obnoxious ring tone.

This game made me fall in love with video games again

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 09:33 AM PDT

Hey people! So to start this off, this is just a little something i decided to write for no better reason than to share what i feel with the void. If any of you feel inclined to share your thoughts, that would be more than welcome.

I played this game for the first time quite a while back, closer in date to when it was released. I pirated it because i hadn't had any money to spend on games.

I finished DS1 and DS2 and played most of DS3 by the time i got around to Sekiro, so I'm sure you all know what i felt when muh sweet dodge rolls weren't working all of a sudden. I played a bit, never really understanding what the combat system and game are really about, and put it down. Chalking it up as an L and walking away back to ds3 (which i still cant fucking beat).

Fast forward to about two months ago. I bought DS3 and played through most of it properly (fuck twin princes they suck and i hate them) and suddenly saw a steam popup add for Sekiro. By then i had watched some people play it and had had a better idea of how the game flows (though i want to point out this is the most blind i have ever walked into a fromsoft game!). I decided to try my hand at the game again, because if i have the time to burn at the twin princes pire of sorrow, i have the time to give Sekiro another go.

This is where my love story with this game begins. These past few years i have been playing video games less and less. Finding less enjoyment in the hobby in general, though i have always carried a deep love for it.

Sekiro sparked my interest like i was a twelve year old playing his first real game on the hand-me-down pc he just got from his uncle. It started slowly but after a few hours of play i found myself thinking about the game constantly and even bringing it up to friends. Every time i opened up the game i couldn't wait to find out what's gonna fuck me up this time, what new area i will find, or what bullshit boss i will eventually conquer. At a certain point i can even say i got pretty good at the game, even beating some bosses on the first try (lady butterfly and the two giant horny monkeys)

I can proudly say i have resorted to the wiki and guides a very small handful of times (very rare for me regarding a from soft game, i played DS1 with the wiki open in the background) . Which in my eyes speaks to the incredible design of the game. And forced myself to learn the game properly out of love and respect towards it.

After i beat shura and isshin (fucking loved those fights to death) it was entirely clear to me a new game plus run is in the books, which is a first for me for any game ever.

I am writing this the day after i beat the first gauntlet of strength and wondering if i should go back and get the 3 prayer beads and ONE fucking gourd seed i missed (god damnit) before heading into NG+.

I wish you people all the best, the game this community is based around is my new favorite game and it will always stay close to my heart.

    .........

Oh and fuck headless they are the most cancerous steaming sacks of human feaces on the face of the planet.

TLDR : over the past few years i have been falling out with video games. Sekiro rolled around and sparked my love for the hobby again, making me feel like an excited twelve year old.

Wolf vs Genichiro, Ishin and Owl, How They All Complement Each Other, and How They Highlight the Difference Between Japanese vs Western Concepts of "Honour"

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 09:54 AM PDT

What's interesting about the rivalry between Genichiro and Wolf is that the former is a samurai who seems to fight kind of dirty, and arguably lacks honour, and the later is a shinobi who is incredibly stoic and honour bound; like maybe they should swap jobs lol.

That said, their respective positions stop them from being genre cliches (evil, cheating shinobi vs honourable samurai etc.). Also, I gather the whole concept of "fighting honourably" is very different in Japanese Bushido than it was in medieval Europe, for example. Genichiro using a bow in a sword fight might seem sneaky, almost like cheating to a westerner, since he is using a resourse he knows his opponent doesn't have; but on the other hand he is able to use it incredibly skillfully (getting off three arrows while still in mid hair, so like three arrows a second, basically) and it's also interesting because I believe the first samurai were primarily bowmen. So it shows an area of Bushido that is often under represented. Also not using every resource at your disposal would be seen as simply bad strategy, and one should always expect their opponent to do the same. In the West, by contrast, codes if chivalry see aristocrats treating war much more like a game: it seen as dishonourable to try and use tricks or unexpected weapons (like a gun or bow, when your opponent only has a sword). In Bushido ones inability to adapt to anything your opponent might throw at you, is your fault, not theirs.

This brings us to Ishin, the greatest swordsman, the ultimate samurai. Who also uses a gun when he feels like it. Again, this isn't because he is "bad Ishin". Sword Saint Ishin represents simply: Ishin in his prime. He is no less a samurai for using a gun. The idea, propagated by some Hollywood movies, that samurai were against guns, because guns were op or "not honourable", is total nonsense. Samurai loved guns BECAUSE they were op and created yet another possible strategy in certain situations. Ofcourse a samurai would never simply rely on a gun, but only because that would limit their avenues of attack.

By contrast, Owl is the game's representation of the ultimate shinobi fighting style: he relies heavily on tricks, status effects and deception. Maybe he is less honourable than a typical samurai general, but again, the general's reliance or over specialisation on one type of fighting style would actually be seen as a limitation and therefore a flaw in their technique, rather than something to be admired. Owl feels so diametrically different to fight than the two other main bosses (Genichiro and Ishin), who are both samurai.

With Wolf we are given the opportunity to combine all these different fighting styles, and combine them with something approaching the stealth mechanics of the Tenchu series (though Tenchu's stealth is much more realistic, complex and challenging) to combine a kind of all round simulation experience of the martial arts of feudal Japan. The story seems to perfectly complement the gameplay mechanics in a way no other soulslike, or Fromsoft game, does.

First Time Defeating the Sword Saint - No Death

How does High Monk work exactly?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 11:36 PM PDT

I'm using this ability now since I like the animation and how much posture damage it deals, but I sometimes notice that it connects after a sweep and the posture doesn't get damaged, and against Corrupted Monk she will receive posture damage but not get stunned and it's an inevitable hit there, does anyone have the answer to this?

Which boss is your absolute favorite and what contributes to that?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 07:49 PM PDT

Personally, I love Inner Isshin for the atmosphere and variety in movesets, but I also love Inner Genichiro for the aggressiveness, it's just unyielding!

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 11:12 PM PDT

Just finished my first playthrough ,got the frozen tears ending, killed DoH, is there anything else to do before playthrough #2? Should I stock up on anything? Should I farm exp before the playthrough#2? Also what should I expect from playthrough#2? Is the flow of the story similar or should I be doing different stuff?
